All Sea Turtle Hatchling releases take place at sunrise or sunset.
This is because the sun acts like a spotlight when high in the sky allowing predators to prey on hatchlings easily.
Releasing hatchlings at sunrise and sunset increases the hatchlings chance of survival.
All releases take place at sunset on the beach in Las Playitas, Todos Santos.
From Mercado Sol II, take the dirt road north about 7 miles. You will see a yellow sign
on the road "Bienvenidos a Campamento Las Playitas." Turn left at the sign traveling due west.
Please park at the bottom of the dunes, and leave your dogs at home. If you cannot walk over the dunes, someone
will assist you on an ATV. Maps and Directions
When are the
Hatchling Releases?
The public releases take place at sunset. Olive Ridley releases take place regularly September-January. Leatherback
and Black releases take place occasionally December -May.
.
How do they Know?
At sunrise, and throughout the day a technician will check the expected
nests for emerged hatchlings. When the first hatchlings have emerged on their own, the nest is "cleaned"
in the afternoon to make sure no turtles get trapped in the bottom of the nest.
.
How is All of this Possible?
The incubation corral
and greenhouse are constructed, nests are rescued, temperatures are monitored, nests are escavated, hatchlings are cared
for and released all through your generous donations.
